"Day in the Life..." Series

If you want a thorough view of what our current homeschool looks like, the best place to start is with our "day in the life" series of posts, written in January 2013 and chronicling detailed aspects of each student. These were part of a Day in the Life link-up over at Grateful for Grace; if you are really interested, pop over and read her posts as well as the others who linked up.

Day One: Semester Check-Up
This post gives a good overview of the first semester of our 2012/2013 school year; at that time, it was the first semester of 9th grade (high school) for one student, first semester of 6th grade (middle school) for the next, and first semester of dealing with dyslexia for the third.

Day Two: What the Mom Does
This post focuses on the role of a mom/teacher who is juggling the needs of three very different students; how one moves from assisting with Geometry to teaching reading readiness, and still makes time for Junior High English in between.

Day Three:  On-Line (Distance Learning) High School
In this post, I detailed what my oldest son's routine looks like as he works through his first year of high school using an on-line distance learning program. If you've ever wondered about on-line options, this is the post to read.

Day Four: A Look at Middle School
A glimpse at what a day looks like for a newly-minted 6th grade boy; he has 2 courses that are via the same on-line program as his older brother, and the rest is typical home school stuff. This is an honest view at what his day looks like.

Day Five: Essay from a 6th Grader
One thing I always wished for in my years of homeschooling was to see samples of other children's work, so I would have some idea of how my sons stacked up against their same-age, same-grade peers. In light of that, I decided to post The Artist's essay on "My Hero" complete with his teacher's grade and comments (this is submitted to his on-line English class, so not mom-graded).

Day Six: Homeschool Moments with the Seven Year Old
My particular seven year old is newly diagnosed with dyslexia and a few other processing delays which make learning to read very difficult for him; this is a glimpse at some quotable moments throughout his homeschool week, the stuff that shows that behind the learning challenges, there's a very real, normal, funny, witty boy.

Day Seven: Journey to Diagnosis
This is as real and honest as it gets. The truth, good, bad & ugly, about realizing our son needed an outside evaluation, what we learned, and how that made us feel; from grief to hope, all in one post.

Day Eight: The Plan (the road to literacy)
And this is how we will tackle his learning challenges; the plan we'll follow so that "maybe he'll read" will become "he is reading."  Perhaps the most detailed post ever, with every single aspect of his reading remediation & various therapies addressed. It is a very long post, but full. If you have a struggling reader, and suspect dyslexia or other processing delay, this post will give you ideas for what to do.

Day Nine: School on Vacation
Finally, a post about what it looks like, really, to take school with you when you travel.
